In 2017, Wikimedia has embarked on a multi-year strategy process to define the future of our movement. One of the first results is our Strategic Direction: “By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us.” Now we need to determine how we get there, and how the Wikimedia movement needs to change its structures, resources and dynamics so we can ultimately meet the priorities of “Knowledge as a Service” and “Knowledge Equity” laid out in the Strategic Direction. We are now on a mission to identify and implement the necessary changes on a global scale. Nine Working Groups (Roles and Responsibilities, Revenue Streams, Resource Allocation, Advocacy, Partnerships, Community Health, Diversity, Product and Technology, Capacity Building) are developing recommendations on how to set us up for success: How can power and money be distributed across the movement in an equitable way? How can we improve our organizational structures to support communities and knowledge that have been left out because of power structures and privileges? What do we need to change to become a healthy, diverse movement that welcomes everyone who joins our vision to participate.
